UAAP women's roundup: Ateneo, NU, UP improve records; Adamson hands Monteclaro 1st win
UAAP Season 86 women's basketball tournament Game Day 5 results
Adamson University (AdU) lifer Ryan Monteclaro finally got rewarded this weekend as his Lady Falcons captured their first win in the UAAP Season 86 women’s basketball tournament.
It was a sweet victory for the former Soaring Falcon himself who played the full five years for the San Marcelino side from Season 73 to 77, calling the breakthrough a “relief”.
“Of course, in life in general, we always want to win. Winning is something that gives us relief. Ang goal ko naman talaga is to make the team better. May mga struggles pero getting this first win, hopefully ito na yung magiging breakthrough namin,” he said.
Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) fended off a monster 20-20 game from Far Eastern University (FEU)’s Josee Kaputu, while the University of the Philippines (UP) and National University (NU) remained the top two squads after the end of all four games.

Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) 72, Far Eastern University (FEU) 64
The weekend started with the Ateneo Blue Eagles twin towers of Kacey Dela Rosa and Sarah Makanjuola proving to be enough to fend off a 26-point, 20-rebound performance from FEU Lady Tamaraws big Josee Kaputu for a 72-64 win.
Dela Rosa had 20 points and 11 rebounds, Makanjuola added a double-double of 13 points and 11 boards, while Junize Calago and Jhazmin Joson chipped in 14 and 10, respectively.
FEU failed to protect a 32-19 lead early in the match as Ateneo went on a 20-6 third quarter.
Later, the Katipunan side led by as much as 68-55 with four minutes left in regulation.
Kaputu shot 9-of-15 from the floor and a perfect 8-of-8 from the line, although could not get support as the rest of the Lady Tamaraws shot only 33.3 percent overall.
Jaina Del Prado and Queenie Aquino each scored nine points, but the latter needed 11 shots for her output.
With the victory, Ateneo stretched its winning streak up to four games, strengthening its grip on the second spot in the team standings along with the Lady Bulldogs.
University of the Philippines (UP) 73, University of Santo Tomas (UST) 69 (OT)
In a battle between two Final Four contenders, Favour Onoh and Louna Ozar hit big baskets late as the UP Fighting Maroons repulsed the UST Golden Tigresses in overtime, 73-69 on Saturday.
The frontcourt tandem accounted for back-to-back baskets to push the lead to 73-69 with 1:22 left in the extra time.
The Tigresses failed to convert afterwards, falling to 3-2 in the women's tournament.
Kaye Pesquera led the Diliman side with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including four triples.
Ozar had 16 points and four steals while Onoh finished with nine points, 17 rebounds, and five blocks.
Kent Pastrana had 19 points but shot 7-of-20 overall. Tantoy Ferrer had 14 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, and five steals.
Brigette Santos tallied 11 points and seven rebounds as Tacky Tacatac struggled with just three points on 1-of-11 from the field.
National University (NU) 91, De La Salle University (DLSU) 53
The action continued on Sunday with Camille Clarin producing 19 points on five triples as the NU Lady Bulldogs cruised in the fourth quarter to beat the De La Salle Lady Archers, 91-53.
The Lady Bulldogs had a 32-8 fourth period en route to their fourth win in five games this season.
Princess Fabruada added 13 points, five rebounds, and three steals while five others scored at least seven for NU.
The defending seven-time champs shot 11-of-34 from three-point land, compared to only 4-of-16 for the Lady Archers.
Lee Sario had 14 points, five rebounds, and three assists but shot 3-of-13 from the field.
Betina Binaohan added 12, while Aji Bojang had a double-double of 10 points and 16 boards.
The rebuilding La Salle side dropped to 1-4 in the team standings with the loss.
Adamson University (AdU) 71, University of the East (UE) 41
In a matchup between winless sides, the Adamson Lady Falcons ended their four-game losing skid with a 71-41 win over the slumping UE Lady Warriors on Sunday, gifting rookie head coach Ryan Monteclaro his first win in the process.
Crisnalyn Padilla sparked a run to end the first half to give Adamson a comfortable 36-20 cushion before Victoria Adeshina maintained the separation in the last two quarters.
Adeshina had 12 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals while Padilla finished with 11 points, three assists, and two steals.
Adamson scored 28 extra points off 30 UE turnovers.
Minslie Paule and Kat Ruiz both chipped in 10 points for the still winless Lady Warriors, which shot just 26.3 percent field from the field and 23.5 field from three-point line.
