UAAP women's roundup: Welcome to the Cayabyab, Joson, and Soriano show
UAAP Season 86 women's basketball tournament Game Day 7 results
While graduating Ateneo de Manila University combo guard Jhazmin Joson has transitioned into a leadership role for the Blue Eagles, it doesn’t mean the Gilas Pilipinas Women mainstay is not capable of taking over for her squad.
She proved just that when the Blue Eagles outlasted the University of the Philippines over the weekend to end their unbeaten reign and make the competition as tight as ever.
National University’s Kristine Cayabyab and University of Santo Tomas’ Eka Soriano — the reigning Finals MVP and Season MVP, respectively — also put on impressive individual performances to tow their squads to victory.
Here are the results of Game Day 7 of the tournament:
University of Santo Tomas (UST) 82, Far Eastern University (FEU) 66
Reigning women’s MVP Eka Soriano played her best game of Season 86 yet while Kent Pastrana dropped 28 points as the UST Golden Tigresses ended the first round of the UAAP women's basketball tournament with an 82-66 win over the FEU Lady Tamaraws on Saturday at the Adamson Gym.
Pastrana scored 17 of her 28 points in the second quarter and added five rebounds, three assists, and six steals to her line.
Soriano finished with 17 points behind 4-of-7 shooting from deep; she also dished out 11 assists and grabbed five boards.
After Pastrana's exploits, UST went on a 41-30 second half to pull away and notch its fifth victory of the season.
Josee Kaputu had a near double-double of 22 points and nine boards, while Queenie Aquino chipped in 18 points, four rebounds, and three dimes for the Lady Tams, which finished with a 2-5 record after the first half of the tourney.
De La Salle University (DLSU) 80, University of the East (UE) 62
The De La Salle Lady Archers gained more momentum as they closed out the first round blasting the struggling UE Lady warriors, 80-62.
Lee Sario had 15 points, eight rebounds, and four assists, although she shot 1-of-8 from downtown.
Luisa Dela Paz, Bernice Paraiso, and Luisa San Juan all tallied double-digit scoring with 14, 12, and 11 points, respectively as La Salle picked up its second straight win.
Minslie Paule top-scored for the Lady Warriors with 17 points, seven boards, five assists, and two steals, while Dianne Pedregosa added 15 points and six rebounds.
UE pulled to within 45-40 late in the third quarter, but La Salle's top scorers linked up in the fourth for a strong finishing kick that saw the Taft side take an 18-point advantage.
National University (NU) 95, Adamson University (AdU) 65
Last season's Finals MVP Kristine Cayabyab scored 22 points built on six triples as the NU Lady Bulldogs rolled past the Adamson Lady Falcons, 95-65.
Cayabyab shot 6-of-9 from three-point range and an efficient 8-of-13 overall from the field to lead NU to a 6-1 record.
Camille Clarin backstopped Cayabyab with an all-around performance of 18 points, six rebounds, six assists, and two steals.
Aloja Betanio and Karl Ann Pingol both scored 11 while Stefanie Berberabe once again filled the stat sheet with a line of four points, six boards, seven assists, and six steals.
NU shot 48.1 percent from the field and 12-of-32 from downtown.
Victoria Adeshina had 15 points and 13 rebounds while Kim Limbago and Ann Dampios both tallied nine markers, although Limbago committed eight turnovers.
Adamson finished with a 2-5 record after seven games, tying La Salle and FEU from fifth to seventh.
Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) 85, University of the Philippines (UP) 79
In the final showdown of the weekend, Jhazmin Joson went supernova as the Ateneo Blue Eagles put an end to the winning streak of the UP Fighting Maroons, 85-79.
Joson had 29 points, making eight triples and shooting 50 percent overall as the Blue Eagles improved their record to a 5-2 card just behind UP and NU and in a tie with UST.
Junize Calago added 24 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists, while Kacey Dela Rosa had 11 points, seven boards, and three blocks.
Ateneo had a strong 26-15 start to the ballgame but the Maroons fought back to make it just a one-point difference by the halftime break.
The Blue Eagles then finished the job with a decisive second half.
Joson scored 12 in the 3rd quarter, but UP cut the deficit to just 77-71 with less than five minutes left in regulation.
Fortunately, Joson, Calago, and Sarah Makanjuola combined for nine in a crucial stretch to fend off UP for good.
Favour Onoh led the Diliman side in the latest chapter of the "Battle of Katipunan" with 16 points, 18 rebounds, and four blocks while Achrissa Maw had a team-high 17 points.
Kaye Pesquera added 15 but Christie Bariquit and Justine Domingo combined for just 3-of-18 from the floor.
